This is the official website for the stallholders of the Abbey Medieval Festival.
The Abbey Tournament is held each July on the last weekend of the school holidays by the
Friends of the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology. Visit the museum while you're there!
The next ABBEY MEDIEVAL FESTIVAL is 12 & 13 JULY, 2008.
Welcome to the Middle Ages!
Enter the hustle and bustle of a busy market place!
The sights and smells of medieval life surround you...Everyday people dress in blues, greens, browns and yellows of brightly coloured wools and linens.
Men wear decorative hoods and any good lady covers her hair. Wealthier persons might favour red, the most popular colour for hose and hoods.
Sumptuary Laws strictly prohibit the wearing or selling of purple, limiting it to the Royal Household and offenders are severely dealt with. Traders, craftsmen and merchants of all kinds sell their wares from small booths or stalls. Baskets of goods are displayed on trestle tables. Perhaps the traders logo might be displayed on a sign above.
Most of the population can neither read nor write and signs with words are rarely seen.
Small specialist stalls offer goods and services not normally available. It's a once a year opportunity and the crowds vie to be the first to get that special something. Welcome to the Middle Ages!
